Homemade Yogurt

Mix 4 cups of homogenized milk and 1/2 cup of powdered milk (to make it thicker) in a pot/double boiler.

double boiler (butter knives in the frying pan)

For a starter, get a container of good quality yogurt from a health food store.

Warm the starter in a bowl of water (1/4 cup). It is important to not change the starters temperature too quickly or the bacteria will die.

prepping the containers --650 g a batch will fill almost 2 of these

turn on the oven to the lowest setting (150ºF) to warm it.

I forget why we took these pictures of our salt and pepper shakers...

Heat the milk and powdered milk to almost to 170ºF.

Then place in a sink of cold water and cool it to 110ºF.

waiting

Add room temperature starter to mixture.

Turn on oven light and open oven.
Place yogurt inside oven and turn off oven.

Place a tea towel over top of bowl of yogurt and close oven door.  LEAVE LIGHT ON!

I have usually made it in the evening and by morning, the yogurt is ready.  Sometimes it is a bit runny, but add some jam or honey for sweetner or put it in a smoothy!
